Courtney’s Expert Baking Tips

  • Use cake flour for the best taste and texture. Cake flour gives the crumbs their classic birthday cake flavor and light, crispy texture.
  • Go with a good quality pure vanilla extract for the best birthday cake flavor.
  • Use rainbow nonpareil sprinkles over rainbow jimmies for the best results. Jimmies will work, however, the nonpareils give the crumbs a better texture and a more colorful appearance.
  • Break up larger clumps into smaller pieces for even baking and a more consistent texture.
  • Cool the crumbs completely after baking before breaking up the crumbles and storing.

How can I use these birthday cake crumbs?

Sprinkle birthday cake crumbs over cakes, cupcakes, cookies, cheesecakes, or ice cream to add a sweet birthday cake flavor and a fun, crunchy texture. You can even sprinkle it over buttercream frosting when filling layer cakes.

How should I store the birthday cake crumbs?

Store the crumbs in an airtight container at room temperature for 3 to 4 days. You could also store them in the refrigerator for 1 week or in the freezer for up to 2 months.

Can I use all-purpose flour instead of cake flour?

Cake flour is recommended for this recipe because it gives the crumbs their light, tender texture and delicate crispness. It also helps create that classic birthday cake flavor, while all-purpose flour can make the crumbs denser and less crisp.
