What are Hot Chocolate Bombs?
Hot chocolate bombs are chocolate spheres filled inside with hot cocoa powder and marshmallows. They are a fun gift idea for the holidays or during the chilly fall and winter months and are perfect for kids (and adults)!
To make the hot chocolate bombs, simply heat 8 to 10 ounces of your favorite milk and drop in a bomb. You can also pour hot milk over the bomb in a mug. The chocolate will melt, releasing the hot cocoa mix and marshmallows. Just stir and enjoy!

Here is the basic breakdown on how to make hot chocolate bombs.
- Make chocolate shells: Melt the chocolate. Use a three-piece sphere mold to make the shells. Spoon the chocolate in, add the inserts, and add the top mold. Chill until firm. Remove chocolate shells from the mold.
- Fill chocolate shells: Fill half of the shells with hot chocolate mix and mini marshmallows.
- Seal the shells: Microwave a plate for 60 seconds. Place an empty shell onto the plate and swirl to melt the edges. Place the shell onto the filled shell to create the hot chocolate bomb. Be sure to match the edges to make a seal.
- Drizzle: Use a piping bag to drizzle additional chocolate onto the hot chocolate bombs.
1. Peppermint Hot Chocolate Bombs
Ingredients
- Dark chocolate or milk chocolate
- Hot chocolate mix
- Peppermint hard candy or candy canes
- Mini marshmallows and/or dehydrated marshmallows
Directions
- Use a food processor to finely grind the peppermint hard candy/candy canes into powder.

- Fill the shells with 2 tablespoons of hot chocolate mix and 1 tablespoon of peppermint candy powder.
- Add dehydrated marshmallows and mini marshmallows.

- Drizzle with additional melted chocolate using a piping bag. Sprinkle with crushed peppermint candy.
2. Salted Caramel Hot Chocolate Bombs
Ingredients
- Milk chocolate or dark chocolate
- Hot chocolate mix
- Caramel hard candy (I use Werther’s hard candies)
- Mini marshmallows and/or dehydrated marshmallows
- Flaky sea salt or coarse salt
Directions
- Use a food processor to finely grind the caramel hard candy into powder.

- Fill the shells with 2 tablespoons of hot chocolate mix and 1 tablespoon of caramel candy powder.
- Add dehydrated marshmallows and mini marshmallows.

- Drizzle with additional melted chocolate using a piping bag. Sprinkle with flaky sea salt.
3. S’mores Hot Chocolate Bombs
Ingredients
- Milk chocolate or dark chocolate
- Hot chocolate mix
- Graham crackers
- Mini marshmallows and/or dehydrated marshmallows
- Chocolate candy bar
Directions
- Use a food processor to finely grind the graham crackers.

- Fill the shells with 2 tablespoons of hot chocolate mix and 1 tablespoon of graham crackers crumbs.
- Use a kitchen torch to toast mini marshmallows. (optional but highly recommended)
- Add dehydrated marshmallows and mini marshmallows.

- Drizzle with additional melted chocolate using a piping bag. Sprinkle with graham cracker crumbs and dehydrated marshmallows.
- Add a small chocolate candy bar to the top of the bomb if desired.
4. Cookies and Cream Hot Chocolate Bombs
Ingredients
- White chocolate
- Chocolate sandwich cookies
- Hot chocolate mix
- Mini marshmallows and/or dehydrated marshmallows
- Mini chocolate sandwich cookies
Directions
- Use a food processor to finely grind the chocolate sandwich cookies.
- Make the chocolate shells. Add a small amount of chocolate sandwich cookie crumbs to the melted white chocolate before adding to the mold. (How to Make Hot Chocolate Bombs)
- Fill the shells with 2 tablespoons of hot chocolate mix and 1 tablespoon of chocolate cookie crumbs.
- Add dehydrated marshmallows and mini marshmallows.

- Drizzle with additional melted chocolate using a piping bag. Sprinkle with additional chocolate cookie crumbs and add on a mini chocolate sandwich cookie if desired.
5. Mint Chocolate Hot Chocolate Bombs
Ingredients
- Dark chocolate or milk chocolate
- Mint hot chocolate mix or regular hot chocolate mix
- Andes mint chocolate candy
- Mini marshmallows and/or dehydrated marshmallows
Directions
- Chop Andes mint chocolate candy into small chunks.

- Fill the shells with 2 tablespoons of mint hot chocolate mix or regular hot chocolate mix and 1 tablespoon of mint chocolate candy.
- Add dehydrated marshmallows and mini marshmallows.

- Drizzle with additional melted chocolate using a piping bag. Sprinkle with additional chopped mint chocolate candy.
6. Salted Caramel Mocha Hot Chocolate Bombs

- Caramel hard candy (I use Werther’s hard candies)
- Instant espresso powder or instant coffee granules
- Mini marshmallows and/or dehydrated marshmallows
Directions

7. White Chocolate Peppermint Mocha Hot Chocolate Bombs
Ingredients
- White chocolate
- White hot chocolate mix
- Instant espresso powder or instant coffee granules
- Peppermint hard candy or candy canes
- Mini marshmallows and/or dehydrated marshmallows
Directions
- Use a food processor to finely grind the peppermint candy/candy canes into a fine powder.
- Make the white chocolate shells. (How to Make Hot Chocolate Bombs) White chocolate has a thinner consistency than dark or milk chocolate and may require two coats to make the shell.
- Fill the shells with 2 tablespoons of white hot chocolate mix, 1 tablespoon of peppermint hard candy powder, and 2 teaspoons instant espresso powder or instant coffee granules.
- Add mini marshmallows and/or dehydrated marshmallows.

- Drizzle with additional melted chocolate or candy melts using a piping bag.
8. Peanut Butter Hot Chocolate Bombs
Ingredients
- Dark chocolate or milk chocolate
- Hot chocolate mix
- Peanut butter powder (I use PB2)
- Mini marshmallows and/or dehydrated marshmallows
- Mini peanut butter cups
Directions

- Add dehydrated marshmallows and mini marshmallows.

9. Mocha Hot Chocolate Bombs
