Ingredients for Oreo Red Velvet Brownies

  • Unsalted butter
  • Brown sugar
  • Granulated sugar
  • Eggs + egg yolk โ€“ Large eggs, room temperature.
  • Vegetable oil โ€“ Use your favorite neutral baking oil.
  • Vanilla extract โ€“ Vanilla extract enhances the flavor of the brownies.
  • White vinegar – A bit of white vinegar helps to create the perfect red velvet flavor.
  • Red gel food coloring โ€“ I love using Americolor super red gel color. I do not recommend using a liquid food coloring for this recipe.
  • All-purpose flour
  • Cocoa powder โ€“ Regular, unsweetened cocoa powder.

  • Oreo cookies – Roughly chopped and whole Oreos.

How to Make Oreo Red Velvet Brownies

  1. Prep and preheat: Preheat the oven to 350โ„‰ (177โ„ƒ). Prepare a 9ร—9 baking pan with nonstick cooking spray and parchment paper.
  2. Make the brownie batter: In a bowl, melt the butter and brown sugar in the microwave and whisk until smooth. Set aside. Whip the granulated sugar, eggs, and egg yolk until light and pale. Slowly pour in the brown sugar mixture, mixing well, to temper the eggs. Add in the vegetable oil, vanilla extract, white vinegar, and red food coloring. Mix until well combined. Add in the flour, cocoa powder, and salt, and mix on low speed until combined and smooth. Fold in the chopped Oreo cookies.
  3. Bake the brownies: Pour the brownie batter into the prepared pan and spread evenly with an offset spatula. Add additional Oreo pieces into the top of the batter. Bake the brownies for about 24 to 26 minutes or until a toothpick comes out with moist crumbs. Remove the pan from the oven and cool the brownies to room temperature.

Recipe Tips

  • Check out my baking tips post on 10 Tips for Baking Perfect Brownies to learn simple tips and tricks to make the best brownies from scratch.
  • Line the baking pan with parchment paper to easily remove the bars from the pan. Be sure that the paper extends past the edges of the pan so you can simply lift up on the parchment paper to remove the bars.
  • Be sure to whip the eggs and granulated sugar for 2 to 3 minutes until it becomes light and pale. Since there are no leavening agents in the recipe, this adds some air into the batter and makes the chewy brownie texture.
  • Use red gel food coloring for the best vibrant red color. Liquid food coloring is not as pigmented and can change the fudgy texture to a cakey brownie.

Frequently Asked Questions

How should I store the brownies?
  • Store the brownies in an airtight container at room temperature for 2 to 3 days.
Can I add chocolate chips to the recipe?
  • Sure! If you would like milk, semisweet, white chocolate chips or mini chocolate chips would be a great addition to this recipe. I recommend sticking with 1/2 cup.
Why are there no leavening agents in the recipe?
  • There is no baking soda or baking powder in this recipe because we are creating a chewy and fudgy texture by the process. By melting the butter and brown sugar together and whipping air into the granulated sugar and eggs, we are creating the perfect brownie texture.
