How to Frost Cupcakes

The easiest way to elevate a simple cupcake is to frost the cupcake with a perfect buttercream swirl. It gives the cupcake a bakery-quality appearance that is unmatched. However, piping cupcakes can feel a bit intimidating if you don’t know how to do it.

In this baking tutorial post, I will take you through everything you need to know to pipe frosting onto cupcakes. I will teach you the tools you need and tips and tricks for easy piping. I will also show you how to make 4 different buttercream swirls and the best piping tips to use.

Just as all things, remember, practice makes progress. Piping can be tricky and it takes time to learn the skills and to make a great swirl.

To practice your piping techniques, bake up a batch of vanilla cupcakes or chocolate cupcakes paired with vanilla buttercream frosting.

Tools & Supplies You Need to Pipe Cupcakes

Tips and Tricks for Easy Cupcake Piping

  • Buttercream consistency – Be sure that the buttercream is the perfect piping consistency – not too firm, not too soft. If the buttercream is too soft and loose, chill the buttercream for 30 minutes and rewhip. If the buttercream is too firm, allow it to come to room temperature to soften or add a tiny bit of heavy cream.
  • Hand placement – Hold the piping bag with your dominant hand and guide the piping tip with your non-dominant hand. The hand that holds the bag should be placed at the top of the bag. The pressure applied to pipe the frosting should come from the top.
  • Prevent the buttercream from leaking out the top – Be sure that the top of the piping bag is twisted and is being firmly held by your dominant hand. As you pipe, continue to twist the bag and move your hand down as the frosting is piped.
  • Remove air pockets – After you have filled your piping bag, use your fingers to try and massage out any large air pockets to prevent air explosions while you are piping.

How to Pipe Four Buttercream Swirls

Here are the four buttercream swirls I use on my blog and in my cookbook, Girls Just Wanna Bake Cupcakes. Check out my blog post on my six favorite piping tips for frosting cupcakes that are featured below. For each of the swirls below, I used a Wilton 1M piping tip.

1. Rose swirl

Recommended piping tips: Wilton 1M tip | Wilton 2D tip | Ateco 826 tip

  1. Hold the piping tip perpendicular to the cupcake. Position the piping tip slightly above the center top of the cupcake.
  2. Begin piping in the center of the cupcake and apply continuous steady pressure as you swirl the buttercream around the center, swirling outward to the edges.
  3. Once you have covered the entire surface of the cupcake, gradually let off pressure as you continue to swirl to close the rose swirl.

2. Double swirl

Recommended piping tips: Wilton 1M tip | Wilton 2D tip | Wilton 1A tip | Ateco 857 tip | Ateco 826 tip | Ateco 869 tip

  1. Hold the piping tip perpendicular to the cupcake. Position the piping tip slightly above the center top of the cupcake.
  2. Begin piping in the center of the cupcake. Apply continuous steady pressure as you swirl the buttercream around the center, swirling outward to the edges.
  3. Once you have covered the entire surface of the cupcake, lift up the piping tip to create a swirl of buttercream on the outside edge of the cupcake on top of the swirl you first made.
  4. Once you have made the second swirl, gradually let off pressure as you finish the swirl to close it off.

3. Ice cream swirl

Recommended piping tips: Wilton 1M tip | Wilton 2D tip | Wilton 1A tip | Ateco 857 tip | Ateco 826 tip | Ateco 869 tip

  1. Hold the piping tip perpendicular to the cupcake and position the piping tip slightly above the center top of the cupcake.
  2. Begin piping in the center of the cupcake and apply continuous steady pressure as you swirl the buttercream around the center, swirling outward to the edges.
  3. Once you have covered the entire surface of the cupcake, lift up the piping tip to create a swirl of buttercream on top of the first swirl that is slightly smaller. Repeat this process, creating smaller and smaller swirls until you have reached the peak.
  4. Let off the pressure on the piping bag and pull straight up to create the tip. This swirl will look like soft-serve ice cream.

4. Ruffle swirl

Recommended piping tips: Wilton 1M tip | Wilton 2D tip

  1. Hold the piping tip perpendicular to the cupcake and position the piping tip slightly above the center top of the cupcake.
  2. Begin piping in the center of the cupcake and apply continuous steady pressure as you swirl the buttercream around the center, swirling outward to the edges. To create the ruffle appearance, you may have to squeeze the piping bag a bit harder than a typical ice cream swirl. Gently wiggle the end of the piping tip to help form the ruffles.
  3. Once you have covered the entire surface of the cupcake, lift up the piping tip to create a swirl of buttercream on top of the first swirl that is slightly smaller. Repeat this process, creating smaller and smaller swirls until you have reached the peak.
